In a mining well a man is struck and killed by a falling beam. This is jarring and sudden but not gory.
A man falls down a hole, landing on his back and groaning in pain.
Two men are killed in separate mining accidents: one struck by a metal pipe and one struck by a falling beam. Both of these scenes are very shocking and even scary coming out of nowhere. One scene shows a corpse with some blood on it.

A man is beaten over the head with a blunt object. His head is bashed in 3 times offscreen. His corpse is later seen - some blood is shown. Overall, not very gory, but quite disturbing and realistic.
A man is grabbed and shot in the head. This is very realistic and disturbing although not gory. The impact is offscreen but we hear the man slowly die. No blood, but the scene is graphic due to the realism.

Daniel Plainview is a monstrous and unhinged sociopath whose behavior gradually becomes more depraved over the course of the movie.
The ending of the movie is extremely disturbing and intense.
